Corpus Christi May Get a New Airport Attraction

Corpus Christi travelers could soon have a new stop to fill both their tanks and appetites. New Texan gas and gourmet, a popular Texas-based convenience store and dining chain, may soon set up shop on an eight-acre parcel of land near the Corpus Christi International Airport.

According to city documents, the New Texan gas and gourmet location aims to provide a “one-stop shop” experience — combining a gas station, gourmet food, and comfortable dining spaces, all just a short walk from the airport terminal.

A Gourmet Twist on the Traditional Gas Stop

Unlike typical roadside convenience stores, The Texan offers a more upscale experience. Its locations feature fresh, made-to-order meals, clean facilities, and large dining areas. The company prides itself on a customer-centric model, serving food that’s far beyond the usual gas station fare.

A city memo describes The Texan as a place that “serves up gourmet sandwiches, salads, homemade burgers, and daily specials.” This emphasis on high-quality dining sets it apart from traditional fueling stations.

Currently, The Texan operates or plans to open 17 locations across Texas, including sites in Port Aransas and Three Rivers. Each store typically combines a fueling area, restaurant-style seating, and a retail section, catering to both local customers and travelers.

Plans for the Corpus Christi Location

The proposed project calls for a 12,000-square-foot convenience store featuring a restaurant-style interior and two fueling canopies. One canopy will include 28 gas pumps, while another will host four diesel pumps, making it a central fueling hub in the area.

The development would occupy the front section of airport property, using previously vacant land to provide visitors with easier access to quality food and travel essentials without entering the airport’s secured zones.

City planners describe the proposal as a move to fill a significant service gap near the airport. Although the terminal offers some dining and retail options, travelers often find it challenging to locate convenient fuel and food outlets outside the terminal.

Boosting Corpus Christi’s Airport Amenities

If approved, The Texan could represent a broader effort by the city to revitalize and modernize the airport area. The project aligns with ongoing initiatives to make Corpus Christi International Airport a more convenient and traveler-friendly destination.

The memo emphasizes that “a significant gap exists for a comprehensive, easily accessible, and quality one-stop shop for fuel, fresh food, and essential travel needs outside of security.”

Beyond serving travelers, the business could also attract residents, airport employees, and passing motorists, creating new jobs and generating additional revenue for the city through its 40-year lease agreement.

City Council to Review the Lease Agreement

The City Council will review The Texan’s 40-year lease proposal at its October 14 meeting.

If the council votes in favor, development could begin shortly thereafter, potentially transforming the airport’s front entrance into a lively destination for both locals and visitors.

What It Means for the City

The project represents more than just a convenience store. It reflects Corpus Christi’s ongoing efforts to expand its economic base and enhance the traveler experience. With rising tourism and travel, the need for convenient, high-quality amenities near transport hubs grows.

Welcoming The Texan lets the city invest in infrastructure and hospitality, offering travelers true Texas warmth.

Conclusion

From fresh food to full fuel tanks, The Texan could redefine what it means to “stop for gas.” Its mix of quality, comfort, and convenience could make the airport a landmark travelers love.
