Coastal Bend nonprofit launches free hygiene pantry
A Coastal Bend nonprofit expanded services after more families struggled to afford everyday necessities. However, staff members noticed that many clients faced another challenge beyond transportation and housing assistance — affording daily essentials.
According to Judy Telge, founder and director of development for the organization, conversations with clients frequently highlighted concerns about grocery expenses and personal hygiene products.
As inflation and household costs continue affecting families nationwide, nonprofit organizations are increasingly stepping in to fill service gaps. The center recognized residents needed immediate relief from ongoing financial and physical challenges across the Coastal Bend.
Because of that growing demand, the organization decided to create a hygiene and supplies pantry funded through grants. The pantry allows individuals to receive necessary products at no cost.
“We don’t charge people, so that means you don’t have to meet financial requirements to be served,” Telge explained. “We’re happy that we can do that because that takes one more expense out of a family’s budget.”
