Coastal Bend nonprofit launches free hygiene pantry

A Coastal Bend nonprofit expanded services after more families struggled to afford everyday necessities. The Coastal Bend Center launched a free pantry providing hygiene products and household essentials to residents. Organization leaders created the program after repeatedly seeing clients struggle with basic necessities and support services.

The expansion comes as more individuals and families seek help navigating rising living costs and limited access to resources.

Growing demand reveals critical community needs

The Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living has long focused on helping people with disabilities live independently and remain connected to community resources. However, staff members noticed that many clients faced another challenge beyond transportation and housing assistance — affording daily essentials.

According to Judy Telge, founder and director of development for the organization, conversations with clients frequently highlighted concerns about grocery expenses and personal hygiene products.

As inflation and household costs continue affecting families nationwide, nonprofit organizations are increasingly stepping in to fill service gaps. The center recognized residents needed immediate relief from ongoing financial and physical challenges across the Coastal Bend.

Because of that growing demand, the organization decided to create a hygiene and supplies pantry funded through grants. The pantry allows individuals to receive necessary products at no cost.

“We don’t charge people, so that means you don’t have to meet financial requirements to be served,” Telge explained. “We’re happy that we can do that because that takes one more expense out of a family’s budget.”

Free resources are available without income restrictions

One aspect that makes the pantry unique is its accessibility. Unlike some assistance programs that require applicants to meet income thresholds or provide extensive documentation, the Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living offers services without financial eligibility restrictions.

As a result, individuals with disabilities and their families can receive support quickly and without additional stress.

The organization said that removing financial barriers helps ensure that more people can access products that directly impact health, dignity, and quality of life. Many households already balancing medical expenses, transportation costs, and other necessities struggle to afford hygiene items.

Community advocates say access to personal care supplies also supports independence and self-confidence, especially for individuals managing disabilities or chronic health conditions.

The nonprofit continues expanding disability support services

In addition to the new pantry, the Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living continues to provide a range of services to help people maintain independence in the community.

The nonprofit offers housing assistance, transportation support, and referrals to local resources designed for people with disabilities. Staff members also work closely with individuals and families to identify services that improve accessibility and long-term stability.

Community leaders throughout Nueces County have also increased conversations surrounding accessibility and disability services in recent months. Local officials recently established a committee to improve accessibility for residents with disabilities, highlighting broader efforts to address challenges facing the community.

Advocates believe partnerships among nonprofits, local leaders, and community organizations remain essential to creating more inclusive support systems across the region.

Community members are encouraged to support pantry efforts

The organization hopes that donations and community support will sustain the pantry as demand for assistance grows.

Grant funding currently supports the pantry, but nonprofit leaders said ongoing contributions can help expand available supplies and reach more families in need.

Residents interested in supporting the Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living can contribute through the organization’s website. Donations help provide hygiene products, household necessities, and other resources for individuals living with disabilities throughout the Coastal Bend.

For many families, even small forms of assistance can reduce financial pressure and improve day-to-day life. The organization expanded services to meet evolving community needs while preserving residents’ independence and dignity.
