Houston Texans rookie offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge is quickly becoming one of the team’s most promising players ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
General manager Nick Caserio, a longtime NFL talent evaluator, has spent decades assessing players and building rosters. After years working alongside Bill Belichick in New England, Caserio now plays a major role in shaping the Texans’ roster with head coach DeMeco Ryans.
This offseason, one of Houston’s biggest priorities was improving an offensive line that struggled throughout 2025. So far, Rutledge appears ready to become an important part of that turnaround.
“He’s probably the best offensive lineman that we have,” Caserio said while discussing Rutledge’s training camp and preseason performance. “We’re glad he’s here.”
With Houston preparing to open the regular season against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 13, Rutledge has positioned himself to start at left guard.
Keylan Rutledge Emerges as Texans’ Best Left Guard
Competition along the Texans’ offensive line has been significant throughout training camp. However, Rutledge separated himself from the group with his combination of toughness, physicality and versatility.
Caserio said the Texans currently view Rutledge as their best option at left guard. The rookie could also provide flexibility at center if Houston needs him there later in the season.
As the lineup currently stands, Evan Brown is expected to handle center duties, while Ed Ingram is positioned at right guard.
Meanwhile, Aireontae Ersery and Trent Brown are expected to occupy the tackle positions. Together, the group could form Houston’s starting offensive line entering the 2026 campaign.
Rookie Shows Toughness Against Elite Defenders
Rutledge hasn’t earned praise solely for his technical ability. His willingness to compete physically against some of the NFL’s most dangerous defenders has also impressed Houston’s decision-makers.
During training camp, Rutledge battled Texans pass rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter. Those matchups gave coaches a chance to evaluate how the rookie responded against elite competition.
However, another significant test came during a joint practice against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Rutledge became involved in a heated exchange with star defensive end Maxx Crosby. Instead of backing away from the challenge, the rookie stood his ground.
Caserio highlighted that moment as an example of the qualities Houston saw when evaluating Rutledge before the draft. His physical approach, competitive mindset and toughness could prove valuable once regular-season games begin.
Texans Focus on Rebuilding Offensive Line
Houston entered the offseason knowing improvement up front was essential.
The Texans finished the 2025 season near the bottom of the NFL in blocking efficiency. Houston ranked 30th in pass blocking and last in run blocking based on league performance metrics.
Those struggles made offensive line improvement a major offseason priority.
Houston responded by drafting Rutledge while also adding experienced offensive linemen Wyatt Teller and Braden Smith through free agency.
However, the Texans’ projected lineup may look different than many initially expected.
Teller could begin the season as one of Houston’s primary reserve linemen, giving the team an experienced option when injuries or lineup adjustments occur. Smith, meanwhile, is currently on injured reserve because of a plantar fascia injury.
That situation has created an even bigger opportunity for Rutledge.
Houston Prioritizes Physical Offensive Linemen
Caserio has made it clear what characteristics the Texans want from their offensive linemen.
Toughness and physicality remain central to Houston’s evaluation process. Athleticism also matters, particularly the ability to maintain balance and execute blocks effectively against quick NFL defenders.
Rutledge appears to check those boxes.
His strong preseason performance suggests Houston may have found more than a temporary starter. If he continues to develop, the rookie could become a foundational piece of the Texans’ offensive line for years.
Ryans has also praised the toughness and communication displayed by Rutledge and Brown. Those traits become especially important along an offensive line, where five players must consistently operate as a coordinated unit.
Texans Could Turn Weakness Into Strength
Houston’s offensive line remains one of the biggest storylines entering the 2026 season.
The Texans already possess talented players on both sides of the football. However, their ability to protect the quarterback and establish a consistent running game could determine how far the team advances.
Rutledge’s emergence provides encouraging signs.
Still, regular-season competition will represent a much greater challenge than training camp or preseason action. Opposing defenses will test Houston’s rebuilt line with different pressures, formations and elite pass rushers.
Rutledge will have to prove he can maintain his impressive early form when the games begin to count.
Nevertheless, earning a starting position as a rookie represents an encouraging beginning. His physical style and versatility could also give Houston additional flexibility if injuries force changes during the season.
The Texans wanted toughness when they rebuilt their offensive line. So far, Keylan Rutledge has delivered exactly that.
If Houston can transform one of its biggest weaknesses from 2025 into a dependable unit in 2026, the Texans could become a more balanced and dangerous team.
And for Rutledge, the biggest test is only beginning.
