A major artificial intelligence infrastructure project could soon transform South Texas into a national technology hub. Hut 8 announced plans to build the Beacon Point AI Data Center Campus in Nueces County, Texas, a facility the company claims could become the most compute-dense data center in the United States.
The proposed project would deliver 352 megawatts of critical IT capacity under one roof, surpassing even the company’s existing Louisiana operation in scale and processing power. The development signals a major shift for Hut 8 as it moves beyond cryptocurrency mining and deeper into artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Hut 8 Expands Beyond Bitcoin Mining
Founded in Canada and now headquartered in Miami, Hut 8 initially gained recognition for operating large-scale Bitcoin mining facilities. However, company leaders say artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure now drive the company’s long-term strategy.
Hailey Miller, Hut 8’s senior director of regulatory and government affairs, said the company has spent recent years repositioning itself around advanced computing services.
According to Miller, Beacon Point AI Data Center Campus reflects Hut 8’s transition from cryptocurrency-focused operations to AI-powered infrastructure capable of supporting growing computational demands across multiple industries.
The company also spun off its American Bitcoin Corp. division as part of that strategic shift.
Massive AI Facility Planned Near Robstown
The proposed data center campus would sit outside Robstown in Nueces County, placing it near major energy infrastructure while remaining outside direct city permitting authority.
If completed, the facility could become one of the largest technology infrastructure developments in South Texas history.

Water Concerns Emerge During Stage 3 Drought
The project announcement arrives as Nueces County remains under Stage 3 water restrictions. Local officials have warned the region could face worsening shortages later this year, raising concerns about whether a facility of this size could strain local resources.
However, Hut 8 insists the project will not rely on municipal water for cooling operations.
Miller explained that the company plans to use a fully closed-loop cooling system designed to recycle water for years without drawing from local supplies.
Closed-Loop Cooling System Explained
The proposed cooling infrastructure would operate using approximately 1.8 million gallons of water trucked in from outside Nueces County. Once filled, the water would continuously recirculate within the system.
According to Hut 8, the system would only require refilling every four to seven years.
The company also stated that municipal water use would remain limited to restrooms and sinks, with daily consumption estimated at less than 10,000 gallons — comparable to a small restaurant.
Hut 8 emphasized that the facility would under no circumstances use municipal water for cooling.
Power Demand Raises Reliability Questions
The Beacon Point AI Data Center Campus would connect to the Texas power grid through a 1,000-megawatt interconnection agreement with AEP Texas.
As a result, some residents have expressed concerns about whether another large industrial user could place additional stress on the electric grid, especially after the 2021 Texas winter storm and repeated ERCOT conservation warnings.
Hut 8 says the project’s infrastructure will be privately funded and designed to avoid burdening local ratepayers.
The company plans to construct a dedicated substation funded through secured project financing. Officials also stated that residential customers, hospitals, schools, and emergency services would receive grid priority during severe weather events.
Additionally, the campus would include on-site backup generation systems.
Economic Impact Could Reach Hundreds of Millions
Beyond its technological scale, the project could deliver significant economic benefits across South Texas.
Hut 8 estimates the development will create roughly 1,900 construction jobs and more than 200 permanent positions once operational.
The company says it has already begun discussions with local educational institutions and workforce training programs to prepare residents for careers tied to the facility.

Although the facility does not require formal city or county approval, Hut 8 says it plans to maintain communication with residents and leaders throughout the development process.
The company intends to host public engagement sessions and provide opportunities for residents to ask questions directly.
