A murder investigation tied to a deadly stabbing near Everhart Road has led to the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect, according to the Corpus Christi Police Department.
Authorities confirmed Friday morning that Angel Hernandez was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing death of 19-year-old Hugo Briseno. Hernandez also faces an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said Hernandez and Briseno knew each other before the incident, which unfolded during the early morning hours of May 29.
Fatal Stabbing Happened Near Everhart Road
Officers responded to the 4600 block of Everhart Road around 1:41 a.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing. However, investigators said both victims had already been transported to a nearby hospital before police arrived at the scene.
Briseno later died from his injuries, while a second victim survived the attack.
Investigators believe the violence began with a disturbance at a nearby business. Police said the individuals involved were separated after the initial altercation and eventually left the area.
However, the situation escalated again shortly afterward when a second confrontation broke out in a nearby parking lot.
Second Altercation Turned Deadly
According to detectives, the stabbing occurred during that second confrontation. Both victims suffered stab wounds during the altercation.
The Corpus Christi Police Department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit immediately took over the investigation and began interviewing witnesses and others connected to the case.
Authorities previously said everyone involved in the incident knew one another, suggesting a personal dispute sparked the confrontation.
Murder Charge Filed Against Suspect
Police announced that Hernandez now faces a murder charge related to Briseno’s death. In addition, officers served him with a warrant charging aggravated assault with a deadly weapon connected to the surviving victim.
Investigators have not yet released additional details about what led to the confrontation or what evidence directly linked Hernandez to the stabbing.
At this time, officials have also not confirmed whether additional arrests or charges could follow as the investigation continues.
Police Continue Active Investigation
Detectives remain actively investigating the case and are continuing to gather evidence and conduct interviews. Officials have not released the surviving victim’s condition or details of possible surveillance footage.
The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which drew community attention after the fatal stabbing near one of Corpus Christi’s busy commercial corridors.
