A tragic boating accident off the coast of Corpus Christi claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy early Saturday morning after two vessels collided near Bird Island Basin. Authorities continue to investigate the incident while also highlighting another boating accident the same day that ended in a successful rescue, emphasizing the importance of boating safety and emergency equipment.
Fatal Boat Collision Near Bird Island Basin
The deadly crash occurred around 6 a.m. Saturday near the Bird Island Basin boat ramp along the Laguna Madre on Padre Island, approximately 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi.
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, two boats—a jon boat carrying three occupants and a center console vessel—collided on the water. During the impact, a 16-year-old passenger aboard the jon boat was ejected into the water.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after 6:15 a.m. Despite rescue efforts, the teenager did not survive the incident.
Officials have not publicly released the victim’s identity. Texas Parks and Wildlife extended its condolences to the boy’s family, expressing sympathy during what it described as an incredibly difficult time.
Investigation Into the Crash Continues
The Texas Game Warden Boat Accident Reconstruction Team has launched an investigation to determine what led to the collision.
Authorities have not yet disclosed factors such as weather conditions, visibility, speed, or whether operator error contributed to the crash. Investigators will examine evidence from the scene, interview witnesses, and inspect both vessels as they work to establish the sequence of events.

Second Boating Incident Ends in Successful Rescue
Less than two hours after the fatal Corpus Christi collision, another boating emergency unfolded in a different part of Texas.
Around 7:15 a.m., a fishing tournament participant at Lake Tawakoni fell from his boat after it struck a submerged tree stump. Unlike the earlier tragedy, rescue crews safely rescued the boater after he spent several hours in the water.
Texas Game Wardens credited the rescue to the man’s life jacket and activated engine cut-off switch. These safety devices helped prevent the boat from continuing without its operator and improved rescuers’ ability to locate him.
Multiple agencies, including fire crews, law enforcement, Air Evac 67, and drone teams, rescued the boater.

The two incidents, occurring within roughly an hour of each other, serve as a powerful reminder that conditions on the water can change without warning.
