A deadly San Patricio County crash claimed five lives Saturday morning after two vehicles collided near the intersection of the US 77 access road and State Highway 89.
The collision involved a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2011 Toyota Tundra. Investigators said preliminary evidence indicates that the Jeep failed to yield at a stop sign before the pickup struck its passenger side.
Five people traveling in the Jeep died, while the Toyota driver and his two young sons escaped serious injury. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Deadly Crash Occurred Saturday Morning
The San Patricio County crash happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. Texas Highway Patrol troopers responded to the intersection and began examining the vehicles, roadway, and other available evidence.
According to preliminary findings, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound along the US 77 access road. Investigators said the driver failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign.
At the same time, the Toyota Tundra was traveling south on State Highway 89. The pickup then struck the passenger side of the Jeep, causing a collision that proved fatal for several occupants.
Authorities have not released further details about the vehicles’ speeds, road conditions or other possible factors. Because the investigation remains active, the preliminary account could change as troopers gather additional evidence.
Five Jeep Occupants Died After Collision
Four Victims Pronounced Dead at Scene
The Jeep’s driver, 37-year-old Samantha Cruz of Corpus Christi, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three passengers also died at the crash site. Authorities identified them as 63-year-old Sara Cruz, 64-year-old Sonia Montes, and 61-year-old Sallie Montes.
Justice of the Peace Precinct 8 Judge Leslie Pullin pronounced the four victims dead. Officials did not immediately provide further information about their relationships or travel plans.
The loss of multiple lives made the collision an especially devastating event for the families involved and the surrounding South Texas community.
Fifth Victim Died at the Hospital
A fifth Jeep occupant, 68-year-old Ruben Cruz, initially survived the crash but suffered serious injuries.
Emergency personnel arranged for HALO-Flight to transport him to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline for treatment. However, authorities said he later died from his injuries at the hospital.
His death brought the total number of fatalities from the San Patricio County crash to five.
Toyota Driver and Two Sons Survived
The Toyota Tundra’s driver, a 46-year-old San Antonio man, was traveling with his two sons, ages 15 and 11.
All three avoided serious injuries, according to authorities. Nevertheless, emergency personnel transported them to Northwest Emergency Room as a precaution.
Officials did not release their names or provide additional details about their conditions. Their survival highlights the unpredictability of side-impact collisions, which can lead to markedly different outcomes for occupants of the vehicles involved.
Investigation Remains Active
Texas Highway Patrol troopers from the Sinton office continued working at the intersection Saturday. Their investigation will seek to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether any additional factors contributed to the deadly collision.
Investigators commonly review physical evidence at a crash scene, including vehicle damage, tire marks, roadway signs, and final resting positions.
