The Diocese of Corpus Christi has entered a new chapter of leadership with the appointment of its ninth bishop, marking a significant moment for Catholics across South Texas. On Dec. 1, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV has officially appointed Bishop Mario Alberto Avilés to lead the diocese, according to a news release from diocesan officials.

Bishop Avilés succeeds Bishop Wm. Michael Mulvey, who faithfully shepherded the diocese for nearly 15 years following his appointment in 2010. As the community prepares for this historic transition, clergy and parishioners alike are reflecting on both Mulvey’s legacy and the promise of new leadership.

A New Era for the Diocese of Corpus Christi

The appointment of Bishop Mario Alberto Avilés comes at a meaningful time for the Church, coinciding with the Advent season—a period centered on hope, renewal, and preparation.

In a heartfelt statement, outgoing Bishop Mulvey expressed confidence and gratitude as he welcomed his successor.

“We welcome Bishop-designate Avilés with open hearts and deep prayer,” Mulvey said. “As we enter the sacred season of Advent, a time of hope and joy, we are reminded that Christ continues to guide and shepherd His Church. This moment brings grace to the Diocese of Corpus Christi.”

This leadership transition signals both continuity and a new opportunity for the diocese, which serves thousands of Catholics throughout the Coastal Bend region.

Who Is Bishop Mario Alberto Avilés?

From Mexico City to South Texas

Bishop Avilés was born on Sept. 16, 1969, in Mexico City, where his early faith formation began. At just 17 years old, he joined the Oratorian community founded under the patronage of St. Philip Neri 1986, starting a lifelong journey of religious service.

He started his priestly formation in Mexico City before continuing his studies in Rome. There, he earned bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and sacred theology from the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, one of the Church’s respected academic institutions.

In addition, Bishop Avilés holds a master’s degree in education administration and supervision. He is also a certified teacher in Texas—a background that reflects his deep commitment to both faith and education.

Ordination and Early Ministry in Texas

Bishop Avilés was ordained to the priesthood on July 21, 1998, at

the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle in San Juan, Texas. Soon after, the diocese assigned him as parochial vicar at St. Jude Thaddeus Church in Pharr, where he began directly serving the faithful through parish ministry.

In addition to his pastoral work, he took on leadership roles in Catholic education. He served as both a teacher and principal, demonstrating a strong dedication to forming students spiritually and academically.

Leadership at Sacred Heart Church

In 2002, Avilés was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Hidalgo, Texas, a role that expanded his responsibility within the Diocese of Brownsville. His service extended beyond parish life as well.

From 2000 to 2012, he served as a member of the Permanent Deputation of the Confederation of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri. In 2012, his peers elected him Procurator General, a key leadership position within the congregation.

Service as Auxiliary Bishop of Brownsville

Bishop Avilés’ path to Corpus Christi includes years of episcopal experience. In 2017, Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville, and he officially assumed the role in 2018.

During his time as auxiliary bishop, Avilés worked closely with diocesan leadership, clergy, and lay ministries throughout the Rio Grande Valley. His pastoral focus included parish development, education initiatives, and outreach to diverse Catholic communities.

Now, with his appointment as bishop of Corpus Christi, he steps into whole diocesan leadership for the first time.

What This Appointment Means for the Community

The Diocese of Corpus Christi encompasses a broad and diverse population across South Texas, including urban, rural, and coastal communities. With his background in education, parish leadership, and international formation, Bishop Avilés brings both global perspective and local experience.

Moreover, his roots in a Texas ministry position him well to address the region’s unique pastoral needs, from youth engagement to bilingual ministry and Catholic education.

As the diocese moves forward, many parishioners are hopeful that Bishop Avilés will continue strengthening the Church’s mission through compassion, service, and spiritual renewal.

Looking Ahead

Although officials have not yet announced an official installation date, the diocese will begin preparations in the coming months. Until then, the Diocese of Corpus Christi will continue its daily ministries as it prepares to welcome its new shepherd.

This transition reflects not only a change in leadership but also a reaffirmation of the Church’s enduring presence and mission in South Texas. As the faithful look ahead, they do so with prayerful optimism and anticipation.
