A major front-office move is bringing a longtime Houston Astros executive to the NHL, as Marcel Braithwaite begins a new chapter with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Penguins announced Monday that Braithwaite will become the organization’s new President of Business Operations. His appointment marks a major career transition after 14 years with the Astros, where he became a key figure in the club’s business operations and helped oversee several major projects.
Braithwaite will now bring his Major League Baseball experience to professional hockey, with an immediate focus on strengthening the Penguins’ business operations and maximizing the potential of PPG Paints Arena.
Marcel Braithwaite Leaves Houston After 14 Years
Braithwaite spent more than a decade helping shape the Astros’ organization during one of the franchise’s most successful periods.
He joined the Astros during the early years of Jim Crane’s ownership and eventually rose to Senior Vice President of Business Operations. Throughout his tenure, Braithwaite worked on projects that extended well beyond the baseball field.
His responsibilities included ballpark improvements, security initiatives, naming-rights negotiations, and other commercial developments designed to improve the overall fan experience.
A Proven Track Record With the Astros
Braithwaite also played a key role in developing and operating the Astros’ spring training facilities at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The executive experienced considerable success during his time in Houston. The Astros won two World Series championships and seven division titles during his tenure, giving Braithwaite firsthand experience working within a highly successful professional sports organization.
That background could prove valuable as he transitions into the Penguins’ front office.
The Astros have yet to announce who will assume Braithwaite’s previous responsibilities following his departure.
Penguins Expect Business Growth Under Braithwaite
The Penguins are bringing Braithwaite aboard at an important time for the organization. His primary responsibilities will include business development, fan engagement, and opportunities to improve PPG Paints Arena’s commercial performance.

Although Braithwaite built much of his professional reputation in baseball, his new position demonstrates how sports-business expertise can transfer across leagues.
His experience includes venue operations, sponsorships, development projects, and organizational strategy—all relevant to the Penguins and PPG Paints Arena.
Braithwaite was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and attended Missouri State University. Interestingly, he attended the same university as Astros owner Jim Crane.
Before settling in Texas, Braithwaite lived in several parts of North America and Europe, including Canada, Seattle, and Southern California. He also speaks Dutch fluently.
Braithwaite Prepares for Pittsburgh Move
Braithwaite and his wife are expected to relocate to the Pittsburgh area at the beginning of the 2026-27 season.
His arrival gives the Penguins an executive with extensive experience managing business operations inside a championship-level sports organization.
Now, the challenge will be applying that knowledge to a different league, market, and venue.
