A late-night shooting in downtown Corpus Christi left a 53-year-old man hospitalized and prompted local authorities to arrest two suspects. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours of Dec. 19, drawing a swift response from police and emergency crews.
Shooting Reported on North Mesquite Street
Shortly before 1 a.m., at about 12:47 a.m., Corpus Christi police responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of North Mesquite Street, right next to downtown. Emergency crews quickly arrived after the first calls.
When officers arrived, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds lying on North Mesquite Street. Officers immediately provided first aid until paramedics from the Corpus Christi Fire Department arrived and continued life-saving efforts.
Victim Transported in Critical but Stable Condition
Authorities confirmed that the victim, a 53-year-old man, went to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials described his injuries as serious and listed him in critical but stable condition following emergency care.
As of Dec. 20, police had not released the victim’s name. Police often hold back names in ongoing cases, especially when the victim is still getting care or when families have not been told yet.
Investigation Reveals Altercation Before Shooting
Because of the severity of the incident, the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division was called to the scene. Detectives worked through the night to piece together the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
According to a police news release, investigators determined that several individuals engaged in a physical altercation before someone produced a weapon. During that confrontation, gunfire erupted, wounding the victim.
Two Suspects Taken Into Custody
After processing the shooting scene, officers detained two men, later identified as Macario Trevino, 39, and Sabastian Espinoza, 23. Authorities arrested both on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a charge classified as a second-degree felony under Texas law. Investigators did not immediately release additional details regarding each suspect’s alleged involvement in the incident.
Police Say Incident Appears Isolated
While the shooting worried people living and working downtown, officials stressed that there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Officers believe the shooting was isolated, resulting from the altercation rather than a broader pattern of violence. Investigators are still actively reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing the circumstances of the confrontation.
Active Case Remains Under Review
Police confirmed that detectives continue to actively investigate the case. As they gather additional information, they may update or expand charges based on their findings.
Law enforcement officials encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward. They emphasized that even small details can be critical in building a complete and accurate account of what happened.
