Drivers in Corpus Christi should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this week as crews continue demolishing the old Harbor Bridge. Portions of major roadways — including all main lanes of Interstate 37 — will temporarily close to allow contractors to safely remove overhead bridge spans.
City officials and project leaders say the closures are necessary to complete this critical phase of the Harbor Bridge demolition project. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, follow posted detours, and allow extra travel time.
Port Avenue Closure Scheduled
Beginning at noon on Feb. 17 through Feb. 18, a section of Port Avenue will close between Tancahua Street and Mesquite Street. Crews will use the closure window to prepare for overhead span removal tied to the old Harbor Bridge structure.
While the closure is short-term, it may affect drivers traveling between downtown and nearby neighborhoods. Officials recommend using alternate east-west routes during this period to minimize delays.
Full I-37 Closure This Weekend
The most significant impact will occur this weekend. All main lanes of Interstate 37 in both directions will close between Staples Street and North Chaparral Street.
Closure Schedule:
- Start: 9 p.m., Feb. 20
- End: 6 a.m., Feb. 23
During this timeframe, demolition crews will remove overhead bridge spans from the old Harbor Bridge.
According to Flatiron/Dragados LLC, the project’s contractor, crews will use jackhammers and heavy equipment to break up concrete and load materials for transport. These operations require a complete roadway shutdown to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
Because of the scale of the work, officials selected overnight and weekend hours to reduce weekday traffic impacts. However, drivers should still expect congestion in surrounding corridors.
What Drivers Need to Know
Electronic message boards will outline detour routes throughout the weekend. Authorities strongly encourage motorists to follow posted signage rather than relying solely on GPS navigation, as temporary routing adjustments may not appear on mapping apps immediately.
Below are the primary detour routes:
Southbound I-37 Toward Bayfront and Downtown
Motorists traveling south on Interstate 37 toward the Bayfront, downtown, and uptown areas will:
- Take the direct connector to the southbound State Highway 286
- Exit at Morgan Avenue
- Turn left to access the northbound SH 286 frontage road.
- Turn right on Agnes Street.
This route will guide drivers safely back toward central Corpus Christi destinations.
Northbound SH 286 Toward Bayfront and Downtown
Drivers heading north on State Highway 286 toward downtown and the Bayfront will take the Agnes Street/Laredo Street exit as part of the detour plan.
Leaving the Bayfront Area
Motorists departing the Bayfront and heading toward northbound I-37, northbound U.S. 181, or southbound SH 286 will:
- Turn right on North Chaparral Street.
- Turn left on East Port Avenue.
- Turn right onto the Martin Luther King Drive frontage road for northbound I-37
Alternatively, drivers may take the U-turn at Nueces Bay Boulevard to merge onto I-37 and connect to U.S. 181 or SH 286 ramps.
Officials emphasize that detours may increase travel times, particularly during peak evening hours. Therefore, planning ahead will be critical.
Why the Closures Are Necessary
The demolition of the old Harbor Bridge marks a major milestone in Corpus Christi’s ongoing infrastructure transformation. Removing overhead spans requires heavy machinery, debris removal, and structural dismantling procedures that cannot be performed safely while traffic is in place beneath the structure.
Jackhammering operations and debris transport create potential hazards, including falling materials and limited clearance. As a result, transportation officials determined that full main-lane closures provide the safest environment for workers and motorists alike.
Although temporary inconvenience is unavoidable, the long-term goal remains clear: improve mobility, enhance safety, and modernize regional infrastructure.
Preparing for the Weekend
To minimize stress and delays:
- Allow extra commute time.
- Consider alternative routes in advance.
- Monitor local traffic updates.
- Follow posted detour signage.
Drivers with flexible schedules may want to avoid the affected corridor altogether during peak demolition hours.
City leaders and project contractors acknowledge the inconvenience but stress that the Harbor Bridge demolition represents visible progress in reshaping the city’s transportation network.
As demolition advances, additional closures may occur. Motorists should stay alert for updates in the coming weeks.
