Recognition at Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Meeting
On Thursday, during the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission meeting, Executive Director David Yoskowitz of Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) honored five game wardens for their extraordinary bravery and teamwork. These officers saved a fisherman’s life on March 17, 2024, after he slipped off the jetties into treacherous waters in Port Aransas.
The lifesaving team consisted of Nueces County Game Wardens John Failla, Kyle Hendley, Benjamin Jenkins, and Welden Rappmund, along with Harris County Game Warden Eric Taylor. Their heroic actions during the chaotic spring break week were hailed as a testament to their dedication and quick thinking.
Emergency Call Sparks Immediate Action
The rescue unfolded when Port Aransas dispatch alerted the wardens to the incident. Game Warden Welden Rappmund recounted the tense moments following the call.
“We immediately knew the location because it’s in our patrol area, but the jetty is quite long,” Rappmund said. “Kyle Hendley grabbed the oxygen right away, and we sprinted down the jetty despite the thunderstorm overhead. We didn’t know what to expect.”
The weather conditions that night were dire, with thunderstorms and strong winds making the jetty slippery and dangerous. Undeterred, the wardens coordinated their efforts, knowing time was of the essence.
A Life Saved Against the Odds
Upon reaching the unresponsive fisherman, the wardens faced a challenging task. Slick rocks and turbulent conditions complicated the rescue, but their training and teamwork prevailed. They successfully pulled the man out of the water and administered oxygen until Port Aransas EMS arrived. Thanks to their swift actions, the fisherman survived.
“It was hectic and slippery, but we had to make quick decisions,” Rappmund reflected. “It feels really good to know we accomplished our goal as a team.”
Celebrating Extraordinary Bravery
The wardens received the prestigious Life Saving Award for their exceptional service. This honor is given annually to law enforcement personnel who demonstrate outstanding diligence, perseverance, and judgment in the line of duty. The recognition highlights acts that go beyond normal responsibilities, often under extreme circumstances.
“It’s an incredible honor,” Rappmund said. “Having my partners and family there made it even more special.”
The award ceremony is part of a statewide tradition where TPWD supervisors nominate game wardens who have performed extraordinary feats in the line of duty.
Inspiring Dedication
This heroic rescue underscores the commitment and bravery of Texas game wardens. Their ability to act decisively, even in life-threatening conditions, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect and serve in our communities.
As these five wardens demonstrated, teamwork and preparation can save lives, even in the most perilous situations.
