Rockport Police are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a resident helping an elderly man cross a busy roadway. At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, police said the crash occurred at the intersection of Business State Highway 35 South and West Corpus Christi Street. After the incident, authorities identified the victim as 53-year-old Debbra Gail Daniel of Rockport. The victim was helping another pedestrian. Investigators say Daniel helped an older man cross the roadway safely, then turned to walk back east across the highway. A northbound 2014 Toyota RAV4 struck Daniel in the inside southbound lane. Police said the driver was an 81-year-old woman.
The impact drew a quick response from nearby officers.
Emergency Response and Life-Saving Efforts
Officers administered CPR and emergency aid until EMS arrived. Despite emergency efforts at the scene, Daniel was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. EMS took the driver to Rockport 24/7 ER as a precaution. Police conducted a field sobriety evaluation and found no intoxication.
Driver Cooperated With Authorities
Police said the driver remained and cooperated fully. As of Dec. 23, no charges had been filed. Additionally, after the crash, officers notified Daniel’s next of kin at the scene.
Surveillance Video Under Review
As part of the ongoing investigation, police are reviewing video footage captured by a nearby business, hoping it will clarify the sequence of events, including vehicle movement and pedestrian positioning. Details are still under review. As of Dec. 24, police had not commented on vehicle speed or whether Daniel used a marked crosswalk.
Community Impact and Ongoing Questions
The fatal crash has left the Rockport community shaken, particularly given the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s actions. Friends and residents have described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers pedestrians face on busy highways, even when they are trying to help others. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and may release more information as evidence is reviewed.
