Ritz Theatre Set to Reopen by 2029

Red stage curtains glow under a spotlight as audience silhouettes watch from the darkened theater seats.

After nearly two decades in development, the long-awaited rehabilitation of Corpus Christi’s historic Ritz Theatre is officially gaining momentum. Under new executive leadership, the downtown landmark is now on track to reopen by Christmas Day 2029—just in time for its 100th anniversary.

Arthur Seago, the newly appointed executive director of the Ritz Theatre, shared the optimistic timeline during a recent interview inside the iconic venue. A Corpus Christi native with more than 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Seago returned home with a clear purpose: to revive one of the city’s most cherished cultural spaces.

A New Leader for a Historic Project

Seago joined the Ritz Theatre restoration in October after serving as COO and interim CEO at Santikos Entertainment in San Antonio. That background, he said, prepared him well for the complexity of a project as ambitious as restoring a nearly century-old theater.

“We’re on track, and we will be open before its 100th anniversary,” Seago said. While the official target date is December 25, 2029, he noted that the reopening could come even sooner.

More importantly, Seago believes the Ritz will once again become a cornerstone of downtown life. He envisions it as a vibrant entertainment hub that brings people together and showcases what Corpus Christi can become.

“This is one of those projects that can show people what Corpus can do and become,” he said.

Funding Still a Major Hurdle

Although the project is in a “good place” financially as of early December, a significant funding gap remains. According to Seago, the nonprofit overseeing the restoration has already saved a substantial amount. However, it still needs more than $30 million to complete the full rehabilitation and restoration.

Community Support Matters

Rather than relying solely on large donors, Seago emphasized that community support at every level is essential.

“Not everybody can write big checks,” he said. “If you can afford a $25 check, that’s great. You know, $25 turns into $100, which turns into $1,000, and so on. Any support from the community is appreciated.”

This grassroots approach helps residents feel personally invested in the theater’s revival while steadily building momentum for the final stages of construction.

Three Key Goals Driving the Ritz Forward

Since stepping into his role, Seago has outlined three main priorities that will guide the next phase of the Ritz Theatre’s transformation.

1. Keeping the Project on Schedule

First, Seago sets firm deadlines and drives the project forward. After years of delays, staying on track is critical to rebuilding public confidence and ensuring that the 2029 reopening remains achievable.

2. Strengthening Community Engagement

Second, he wants to deepen community involvement. For Seago, public support is not just financial—it’s also emotional and cultural. The more residents connect with the project, the stronger its long-term future will be.

3. Showcasing What’s to Come

Finally, Seago aims to show the community exactly what the Ritz will offer once it opens. To that end, the theater launched its Ritz Spotlight Series in late November.

This preview program highlights the types of entertainment audiences can expect in the future. According to Seago, four more Spotlight events are already scheduled, with announcements planned for 2026—these range from high-energy concerts to performances by a world-famous traveling dance troupe.

“The goal is to show the community that we’re doing stuff,” Seago said. “We’re not just rehabilitating this building; we’re putting together programs you can experience right now.”

The reopening of the Ritz Theatre will create a lasting economic and cultural impact on downtown Corpus Christi. Once completed, the venue will support local tourism, create jobs, and provide a new stage for regional, national, and international performers.

More than that, the project represents a revival of local history. For decades, the Ritz stood as a symbol of entertainment and community life. Its return will honor that legacy while introducing a modern, state-of-the-art experience for a new generation.

How to Get Involved

Residents who want to follow the project’s progress or contribute to the restoration can learn more and make donations at ccritz.com. Whether through attending Spotlight events, spreading the word, or offering financial support, Seago encourages everyone to take part in bringing the Ritz back to life.

As the countdown toward 2029 begins, one message is clear: the Ritz Theatre is no longer just a vision—it is steadily becoming a reality.
