Corpus Christi Power Outage Hits 8,800

Power has been restored in downtown Corpus Christi after a significant electrical outage left approximately 8,800 customers without service Saturday evening. The disruption affected businesses, residents, and other customers across a large section of downtown before crews restored power around 7:30 p.m.

The Corpus Christi power outage was linked to a problem at a substation on Morris Street. According to AEP Texas Communications Director Omar Lopez, the substation lost power, disrupting the electrical network serving downtown.

Crews responded to the outage and worked through the evening to identify the problem and restore service to affected customers.

Corpus Christi Power Outage Affects Downtown

The outage began earlier Saturday and quickly affected thousands of customers throughout downtown Corpus Christi. At its peak, approximately 8,800 AEP Texas customers were without electricity.

The company’s outage map showed widespread service loss across the downtown area while crews investigated the source of the disruption. Because the outage occurred during the evening, businesses operating at the time were among those affected.

Power outages can create immediate challenges for restaurants, stores, offices, entertainment venues, and other businesses that depend on electricity for daily operations. Lighting, refrigeration, payment systems, security equipment, and communications can all be disrupted when electrical service suddenly goes offline.

Fortunately, authorities did not report any serious injuries connected to Saturday’s outage.

Morris Street Substation Linked to Outage

Substation Problem Disrupted Downtown Network

Officials identified the Morris Street substation as the source of the downtown Corpus Christi outage.

Substations play an important role in electrical distribution systems because they help regulate and distribute power before electricity reaches homes and businesses. Therefore, when a key substation fails, the effects can extend across a broad service area.

In this case, the Morris Street substation lost power, affecting the network serving downtown Corpus Christi. However, AEP Texas did not indicate that the incident involved additional problems elsewhere in the downtown electrical system.

Information available after the outage suggested the disruption remained tied to the substation issue.

Crews Work to Restore Electricity

AEP Texas crews responded after the outage was reported and began working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.

Restoring power after a widespread outage can involve several steps. Crews must first determine the location and cause of the failure. They can then isolate the affected equipment, make necessary adjustments or repairs, and gradually return electricity to customers.

By approximately 7:30 p.m., electricity had been restored to affected customers in downtown Corpus Christi.

The restoration brought relief to businesses and other customers that had spent part of Saturday evening without power. The company credited its crews for their response and work to restore service.

Downtown Corpus Christi Returns to Normal

After the restoration, the outage no longer affected the downtown area. Customers who lost electricity were able to resume normal activities as service returned.

Although the outage was temporary, the number of customers affected made it a significant disruption. An estimated 8,800 customers losing power at the same time highlights how a single infrastructure problem can have a widespread effect on a busy urban area.

Downtown Corpus Christi includes restaurants, offices, entertainment destinations, hotels, residential properties, and other establishments. As a result, a large-scale outage can affect both downtown residents and visitors.

The timing also increased the potential impact on businesses serving customers on Saturday evening.

What Customers Should Do During an Outage

Residents and businesses can take several basic precautions during a power outage. People should keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible, unplug sensitive electronic equipment, and use flashlights instead of candles when practical.

Customers should also avoid downed power lines and treat any damaged electrical equipment as potentially dangerous. In addition, monitoring official outage information can help customers determine whether crews are already responding and when restoration updates become available.

For Saturday’s Corpus Christi power outage, customers were encouraged to monitor AEP Texas for additional information.

With electricity restored, downtown Corpus Christi has returned to normal service. No additional widespread electrical problems connected to the incident were reported, while the Morris Street substation remained the identified source of the disruption.
