Community Rallies for Marine Veteran Killed in Kingsville Crash

Authorities said a late-morning crash killed 35-year-old Moises Castillo as he rode eastbound on Caesar Avenue in Kingsville. According to investigators, a pickup truck traveling west turned left in front of Castillo, which led to a collision that critically injured him.

Following the crash, emergency responders transported Castillo to Christus Spohn Hospital–Kingsville. Despite medical efforts, doctors pronounced him dead from his injuries. Meanwhile, police said the 67-year-old pickup driver suffered minor injuries. As of the latest update, the Kingsville Police Department has not released the driver’s name or announced whether charges will be filed.

Castillo’s death deeply affected South Texas, especially first responders and veterans. As a Marine Corps veteran, Castillo dedicated his adult life to public service. From 2018 through 2025, he served in the Kingsville Fire Department, earning respect for his professionalism and commitment to emergency response.

In recent years, Castillo took another step toward public service by enrolling in the Del Mar College Police Academy. After completing his training, he joined the Kingsville Police Department and was scheduled to be sworn in as a police officer this January.

Friends and colleagues said Castillo treated service as a calling, not merely a career. His move from firefighter to police officer demonstrated his ongoing commitment to protecting and supporting the community he cherished.

After the crash, Jennifer Vasquez launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist Castillo’s wife, Rebecca, as she confronts life after her husband’s sudden death. In her message, Vasquez highlighted Castillo’s lifelong commitment to serving others through military and first response work.

“Moises’ sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him most, especially his wife, Rebecca,” Vasquez wrote. She added that Rebecca now faces not only emotional loss but also the financial responsibilities that come with moving forward alone.

The fundraiser seeks to provide financial stability during a time of profound grief. Vasquez said each contribution—no matter the size—can help ease the hardship and allow Rebecca to focus on healing.

By early January, donors had given $2,795, surpassing two-thirds of the campaign’s $4,000 goal. Organizers encouraged community members to visit the GoFundMe page and share the campaign to help it reach more people.

Local residents, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and veterans’ groups have continued to share tributes for Castillo. Many remember him as a devoted husband, colleague, and friend whose career reflected integrity and compassion.

Police continue to investigate the crash. They have not disclosed whether impairment, speed, or other factors played a role. Officials said they will share more information if they file charges or discover new details.

Although Castillo’s life ended far too soon, community members say he leaves a lasting legacy through the lives he touched. His service in the Marine Corps, the fire department, and law enforcement defines how Kingsville remembers him. As donations grow, the GoFundMe campaign supports his family and reflects community gratitude for his service.
