A teenage suspect has been arrested for an alleged assault involving students on an Odem-Edroy Independent School District school bus, according to the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the incident occurred in early December 2025. The case remains under investigation, with more arrests possible.
Arrest Made in December School Bus Incident
On January 4, about a month after the alleged incident, deputies with the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Jacob Soto, 19, at approximately 6:13 p.m., Sheriff Oscar Rivera confirmed. Authorities booked Soto into the San Patricio County Jail on a $75,000 bond and released him the following day after he posted bond.
Authorities charged Soto with indecency with a child, a second-degree felony under Texas law. The charge stems from an alleged incident on December 9, 2025, when students were traveling home on a school bus after a basketball game in Hebbronville.
Alleged Assault Involved Odem High School Students
Investigators say the alleged victim is a 15-year-old student in the Odem-Edroy ISD. Both the victim and Soto attended Odem High School at the time of the incident.
Law enforcement officials stated that the students were riding a district school bus returning from an away basketball game. The bus reportedly carried students aged 15 to 18.
While authorities have not publicly released specific details of the alleged assault, Sheriff Rivera said students gathered in the back of the bus, where their actions escalated and prompted a criminal investigation.
Investigation Began Days After the Incident
The investigation began three days after the alleged assault. On December 12, sheriff’s deputies assigned to Odem-Edroy High School were notified of the situation and promptly initiated interviews with the reported victim and several student witnesses.
Investigators collected statements and other evidence. Sheriff Rivera stressed that authorities always handle allegations of sexual misconduct, especially those involving minors, with urgency and seriousness.
“We treat these kinds of cases with seriousness,” Rivera said. “The situation escalated quickly, and this type of behavior is not permitted.”
Sheriff Says Additional Arrests Possible
Although authorities have arrested and charged Soto, they say the case remains active and involves other individuals. Investigators say those individuals are minors, which complicates the investigation and potential charges. The District Attorney’s Office is reviewing evidence and witness statements to decide next steps.
“We believe he did not act alone,” Rivera said. “Other students were present, and their actions were a contributing factor.”
Rivera said he could not confirm how many students were involved. The case is unusual due to the number of juveniles and the incident’s circumstances.
School District Has Not Issued a Statement
As of January 7, the Odem-Edroy district had not commented on the arrest or incident. It’s unknown if it has implemented new safety or disciplinary measures.
Many parents and educators continue to raise concerns about school bus safety, especially during extracurricular travel when schools provide limited adult supervision. Law enforcement officials stress the importance of promptly reporting inappropriate behavior to prevent escalation.
Ongoing Case Raises Broader Concerns
The arrest brings attention to concerns about student behavior, supervision, and accountability during school-sponsored travel. Sheriff Rivera noted that behavior initially perceived as minor can cross legal boundaries.
“We do not tolerate this kind of behavior,” Rivera said.“We started asking questions because it’s serious, and we will continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads.”
The investigation remains active as authorities await further review from the district attorney’s office.
