Fog, Speed Linked to Fatal Nueces Motorcycle Crash

A young motorcyclist died in a Christmas Eve crash in Nueces County, which Texas DPS linked to hazardous weather and excessive speed. The community mourns the loss during the holiday season. Visibility across the region dropped to approximately 1/4 mile due to heavy fog at approximately 8:36 a.m., according to DPS. In these conditions, the rider was traveling at a high rate of speed—a combination that proved especially dangerous on rural roadways with curves and limited sightlines.

DPS identified the victim as Jesse Acuna Jr., a 23-year-old resident of Kingsville. He was riding a 2025 CFMOTO 450 SS motorcycle eastbound on Farm-to-Market Road 665. As he approached a curve on County Road 67 in Petronila, the rider lost control.

Troopers note that, at the time of the crash, dense fog significantly reduced visibility. When combined with excessive speed, the rider was unable to safely navigate the curve, resulting in the motorcycle leaving the roadway and striking a metal pole. The impact threw Acuna from the motorcycle, causing critical injuries that required immediate medical attention.

First responders transported Acuna to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital in Corpus Christi for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries. Authorities pronounced him deceased at the hospital. Despite the swift actions of emergency crews, DPS underscored that the force of the crash and its circumstances contributed to the fatal outcome.

Troopers from the Highway Patrol Office in Corpus Christi continue to investigate. Officials are reconstructing the incident, examining roadway conditions, and assessing whether additional factors played a role. While DPS acknowledged excessive speed was a factor, the department has not provided specifics about the motorcycle’s estimated speed. As of Dec. 29, DPS had yet to respond to requests for further comment or for updates on investigations.

While South Texas winters are generally mild, fog can develop quickly—especially during the early morning hours. DPS officials frequently remind drivers and riders that reduced visibility demands lower speeds and heightened caution. Motorcycles are particularly vulnerable in such conditions. Unlike enclosed vehicles, riders have less protection and may struggle to react quickly when visibility drops. Even experienced motorcyclists face increased risk when weather conditions change suddenly.
