A Library Reborn: Modern Learning Meets Historic Legacy
Del Mar College recently unveiled a remarkable transformation of the Corpus Christi Library, formerly known as the William F. White Jr. Library. With a $28 million investment, the college has turned the once outdated, window-scarce structure into a cutting-edge academic hub. The renovated facility showcases sleek modern architecture, state-of-the-art resources, and a deep respect for academic tradition—reflecting Del Mar College’s ongoing commitment to innovation and student success.
During the April 10 open house, which aligned with National Library Week, Del Mar College President Mark Escamilla shared fond memories of his time as a student. He recalled how popular the fifth floor of the library was, even though it offered only a few windows. Arriving late often meant missing the coveted study spots with a view.
Now, as president, Escamilla proudly leads a college that has reimagined the Corpus Christi Library with a fifth floor fully lined with windows. Students can enjoy breathtaking views of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the new Harbor Bridge, while studying in a bright, inspiring environment designed for academic excellence.
More Than Just Books: A Multi-Level Academic Experience
From the moment you step inside, the revamped library welcomes visitors with its spacious first floor, now known as the Duane Sandlin Learning Commons. Named after a beloved Del Mar College counselor whose $1.8 million endowment supported the library’s evolution, this area serves as the library’s “living room.” It’s a place where students and visitors can relax, access computers, or grab coffee from the café, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Del Mar College designed the second floor to include the Stone Writing Center, a sculpture gallery with pieces from the annual CAIN National Art Show, and a flexible meeting space. These features reflect the college’s strong commitment to interdisciplinary learning and creativity.
Del Mar College equipped the third and fourth floors with research assistance, IT Help Desk services, classrooms, and open-access computers. The college designed these floors to support quiet and collaborative work, adding silent reading rooms, individual study nooks, and spaces for creative projects like audio and video production.
Finally, the crown jewel of the library is the fifth floor. Bathed in natural light, it provides a peaceful setting where students can study while enjoying breathtaking city views. Comfortable seating and well-placed bookshelves make it both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
From Construction Chaos to Campus Centerpiece
Del Mar College began renovating the Corpus Christi Library in 2021, which required relocating resources and limiting student access to the book collection. During this period, the college stored books and operated from temporary library spaces across campus. For two years, students had to request books rather than browse the shelves themselves.
Now that the Corpus Christi Library is fully open, students are once again enjoying the experience of in-person research and spontaneous exploration of Del Mar’s most extensive book collection. While other campuses like Windward and Oso Creek hold additional collections, the William F. White Jr. Library remains the academic heart of the college.
Del Mar College Dean of Learning Resources Cody Gregg shared a memorable moment from January when he saw the first student studying on the newly opened fifth floor. The student, grinning with excitement, said they would definitely return—proof of how much the revitalized Corpus Christi Library means to the campus community.
A Symbol of Knowledge and Freedom
During the opening ceremony, President Escamilla and Board of Regents Chair Carol Scott emphasized the enduring importance of libraries. Scott referred to the library as a “crown jewel” of the campus. Escamilla went further, highlighting libraries’ role in preserving fundamental American liberties.
“Libraries are essential to freedom of inquiry, thought, and speech—all of which are the foundation of our democracy,” he stated.
The event also featured a poetic tribute by former Del Mar resource librarian and Corpus Christi poet Alan Berecka. His poem captured the spirit of libraries as both guardians of history and gateways to the future.
“For nothing can happen until a reader turns the page or clicks on a link… bringing the past forward all the while exploring new and unmarked paths to distant futures.”
Moving Forward with Pride
Del Mar College’s investment in the William F. White Jr. Library is more than just an upgrade to a building. It’s a reaffirmation of the college’s commitment to academic excellence, student success, and community growth. As students now fill the library’s inviting spaces, they send a clear message: this is where learning thrives and futures take shape, a testament to the college’s dedication to academic excellence.
