Baisa and Justice: Paw-fect Partners in Public Safety
The City of Corpus Christi has welcomed two dog heroes who are making a big impact in the community. Baisa and Justice, both beloved canines, have become essential members of the Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) and the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD), respectively. Though they serve different departments, these four-legged heroes share one goal: supporting their community uniquely and meaningfully.
Baisa: The Arson-Sniffing Hero
Baisa, a two-and-a-half-year-old Labrador Retriever, is a key part of the Corpus Christi Fire Department’s investigation team. Thanks to an initiative by State Farm Insurance called the Arson Dog Program, Baisa joined the department with a special set of skills. Certified as an accelerant detection canine, she helps pinpoint the causes of fires by sniffing out even the smallest traces of accelerants.
Her work aids CCFD and supports State Farm in handling arson claims. Baisa has assisted with over 57 fire investigations this year, showcasing her remarkable abilities.
“Dog’s noses are so good that sometimes it’s even better than some of the lab results we get,” said CCFD Fire Battalion Chief Tony Perez. “If it were an arson-related fire, she’d immediately alert us.”
Baisa’s keen sense of smell makes her a crucial asset, ensuring accurate and timely fire investigations for the community.
Justice: Bringing Comfort and Joy to the Community
On the other side of town, Justice, a loving Golden Retriever, spreads warmth wherever she goes. She officially joined the Corpus Christi Police Department in April as their emotional support therapy dog. Justice’s role is to provide comfort to those in need, whether they’re trauma victims, hospital patients, or even officers dealing with high-stress situations.
CCPD Senior Officer Chris Lynch, Justice’s handler, shared her incredible impact on people’s lives.
“They’re just so happy to see her. They give you that momentary smile like, ‘Man, life is not as bad as I think,‘” Lynch explained.
Justice is a beacon of hope and relief during critical incidents. She attends officer-involved shooting debriefs, assists children who have experienced trauma, and even brings smiles to students in local schools.
“It’s just a special thing to see how everyone feels better,“ Lynch added.
Justice’s positive energy and loving nature make her an invaluable member of the police department and the entire Corpus Christi community.
Growing Support for These Programs
Two dog heroes, Baisa and Justice, have proven the incredible benefits of canine companions for public safety and emotional well-being. The Corpus Christi Fire and Police Departments hope to expand these programs, providing even more support to their neighborhoods.
If you want to stay connected with Justice, you can follow her adventures on social media, where she shares her heartwarming moments with the community.
These two special canines are a testament to how animals can enhance public safety, emotional recovery, and community connections. Whether Baisa sniffs out the truth or Justice brings comfort and joy, they’re paw-fect additions to Corpus Christi.
