Andrea Montalvo-Hamid, the Assistant Professional Professor and Coordinator for Hispanic Heritage Month at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is thrilled to unveil the university’s planned activities for students and the general public. The celebrations start with a poetry session on September 13th, from 6 to 8:30 pm at the University Center Bayview. The official commencement of the events is on September 18th, to be held at the Anchor Ballroom and Plaza within the University Center.
“In Latino cultures, hospitality often means offering food,” remarked Montalvo-Hamid. “We provide snacks, play music, and sometimes have games. Last year, we introduced vendors and now feature food trucks. It’s all a means for individuals to understand the significance of celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.”
There’s also a chance for students to discover the legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a pivotal figure in the city. Montalvo-Hamid noted that many students must know Dr. Garcia’s influence in the community until they join the campus.
“The event this year is set for September 20, a Wednesday, from 2 to 3:30 pm,” she continued. “It will begin at our Bell Library with a book signing and a keynote address. I anticipate Cecilia Garcia-Akers, Dr. Garcia’s daughter, will be present. After that, we’ll have a statue dedication ceremony.”
Another highlight to look forward to is the ‘En El Frente’ exhibition. This compilation of Chicano independent publications is a must-visit for social justice and history enthusiasts.
