Speed Limits Changes Under Consideration
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has proposed lowering speed limits on specific sections of Ennis Joslin Road and Weber Road in response to public concerns. The adjustments aim to improve road safety and ensure smoother traffic flow in these areas.
Public Concerns Spark Speed Limit Review
TxDOT officials revealed that residents’ requests prompted the speed limit evaluation. According to Juan Marfil, Director of Transportation Operations for TxDOT’s Corpus Christi District, the decision is based on a comprehensive study.
“We’ve had some requests come in asking for us to reduce the speed limit,” Marfil explained. “We’ve gathered all the necessary data, and we’ve already submitted it to the city for review.”
Proposed Speed Limit Adjustments
The proposed changes include:
- Farm to Market Road 43 (Weber Road)
- London area: 50 mph reduced to 45 mph
- Near Saratoga Boulevard (past Oso Creek Bridge): 45 mph reduced to 40 mph
- Ennis Joslin Road (Spur 3)
- Between South Padre Island Drive and Ocean Drive: Standardized at 40 mph
Factors Behind the Changes
TxDOT’s decision is data-driven, considering multiple factors such as:
✅ Driveway density – High access points require lower speeds
✅ Bus stops – Frequent stops and pedestrian movement impact traffic flow
✅ College community – Student pedestrian safety is a priority
✅ Crash history – Reducing speed can help prevent accidents
Marfil highlighted that establishing a uniform speed limit on Ennis Joslin will improve traffic consistency and increase safety for all motorists and pedestrians.
Implementation Plan and Safety Measures
If approved, TxDOT will install portable message signs to inform drivers of the changes before enforcement begins. Marfil reassured the public that safety remains TxDOT’s top priority.
“By reducing speed limits, we can also reduce the severity of crashes,” Marfil stated. “These adjustments will be implemented as soon as the necessary signs are ordered and installed.”
