The City of Corpus Christi is offering tips to make recycling both simple and eco-friendly to assist residents in managing their post-holiday clutter responsibly.
Overflowing Holiday Clutter at Recycling Centers
At the J.C. Elliot Transfer Station, the scene is a familiar one—residents unloading piles of gift boxes, wrapping paper, and tree trimmings. This annual surge in waste reflects the aftermath of holiday celebrations, with recycling centers busier than ever.
“Typically, we see an increase in Amazon packages and UPS boxes during the holidays, as people shop online for gifts,” shared Ray Flores, assistant director of the Solid Waste Authority. With e-commerce booming, it’s no wonder that cardboard boxes and shipping materials dominate the recycling piles.
Sorting the Recyclable from the Trash
However, not everything can be recycled. To prevent contamination and make recycling efforts more effective, the Solid Waste Authority has issued clear guidelines:
Recycling DO’s:
- Plain cardboard boxes: Break them down to save space.
- Wrapping paper (foil-free): Simple paper wrapping is recyclable.
- Holiday cards (without foil): Go for the plain versions.
Recycling DON’TS:
- Ribbons and bows: These are non-recyclable and should be trashed.
- Bubble wrap: Although useful for packing, it doesn’t belong in recycling bins.
- Foil wrapping paper: Its shiny surface makes it non-recyclable.
Dealing with Christmas Trees: Real vs. Artificial
If you opted for a real Christmas tree this year, the city encourages you to bring it to the J.C. Elliot Transfer Station. Turn real trees into mulch to extend their usefulness, but place artificial trees in the trash.
Stay Safe While Cleaning Up
In addition to recycling responsibly, residents are urged to keep their homes secure during cleanup. Empty boxes left in plain view can signal to thieves that new, expensive items may be inside. Dispose of packaging discreetly to avoid unnecessary risks.
