Crews are set to install the last two bridge segments next week, connecting the new Harbor Bridge over the water. While this marks a significant milestone, officials highlight that a three-foot gap will remain to allow for complex engineering adjustments. According to Lynn Allison, a spokesperson for Flatiron Dragados, “It will be an exact process over the next two weeks, ensuring final geometry control and engineering precision.”
From the ground, the bridge’s progress is visible as it takes shape, while aerial views showcase the sheer scale and grandeur of the project. The Belvedere lookout area, a unique aesthetic feature of the bridge, is already becoming a notable highlight.
Complex Engineering in Action
The focus is now on completing the middle span, with crews already lifting the final 10 segments into place. “Yesterday, we lifted the last of the South span segments, leaving just two remaining for next week,” Allison explained. While much of the work occurs out of sight, the final connections involve meticulous geometry control and precision engineering.
After securing these final segments, the bridge will be structurally complete in just a few weeks. However, the project doesn’t end there. Over the next three to four months, crews will work on finishing touches, including barrier rails, traffic lighting, aesthetic lighting, and drainage systems.
Fine-Tuning the Details
Beyond structural work, crews are focused on perfecting the bridge’s appearance and functionality. “You can see how we’re painting the superstructure on the backside with an opaque finish,” said Allison. Drainage installation, surface finishing, and other details are also underway to ensure the bridge is smooth and safe for drivers.
Crews will remove temporary support piers as part of the final phase. They are completing pedestrian fencing, concrete barriers, and roadwork to ensure seamless connectivity for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Preparing for the Spring Opening
Crews work tirelessly to complete the shared-use path entrances, parking lots, and phase-one connectivity at both project ends. “When the bridge opens, it will provide a direct route from 286 on the South side of town to Portland,” Allison shared. Interchange connections and roadwork improvements are also progressing to support the anticipated spring opening.
The Harbor Bridge project represents a remarkable engineering achievement, promising improved connectivity and a modern regional infrastructure.
