Acceptance is the first step to overcoming any challenge, and for retired veteran and grandfather Jesse Quiroz, this includes living with diabetes. Navigating the holiday season as a type 2 diabetic, surrounded by tempting treats, has been a journey of self-discovery, discipline, and humor.
From Pre-Diabetic to Type 2 Diabetic: Jesse’s Realization
In January, Quiroz was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and prescribed medication. Initially, he dismissed the diagnosis.
“I didn’t know much about it, and I told myself I didn’t have it, so I didn’t take it,” Quiroz admitted.
However, by April, the signs became undeniable: persistent fatigue, constant thirst and hunger, and frequent trips to the bathroom. A follow-up visit confirmed he had type 2 diabetes.
This diagnosis was a significant blow to Quiroz’s self-esteem. “I thought I was a substandard individual,” he said. As a retired Army veteran who had attended Ranger School and thrived in elite groups, accepting his condition was difficult.
The First Battle: Acceptance
Quiroz’s first challenge was mental: accepting his diabetes. Once he overcame the initial denial, he shifted his focus to the next hurdle—learning to live with the condition.
“When I got past that, the second battle started, which was living with it. What you can, can’t eat, how much…” Quiroz shared.
Facing the Holidays: Adjusting Lifestyle
The holiday season presented a particularly tough test. Self-proclaimed as “the cookie monster,” Quiroz had to resist his favorite treats. Thanksgiving, typically filled with indulgence, was especially challenging.
“Everyone brings pecan pie because they know Jesse likes it. Unfortunately, Jesse couldn’t have pecan pie,” he laughed.
Despite the challenges, Quiroz uses humor to cope. “I got a hold of my pecan pie, I got a marker, and I wrote sugar-free,” he joked.
Tips for Navigating Life with Diabetes
Quiroz now encourages others living with diabetes to take control of their health and prepare for indulgent occasions.
“Don’t go indulging, but come that day, you can cheat a little,” he advised. He also shared practical tips, like replacing sugary drinks with zero-calorie soft drinks served over lots of ice.
More importantly, Quiroz emphasizes not letting diabetes define one’s identity. “I found out I’m not substandard. I’m just an individual with diabetes. Don’t give up. Follow your care provider’s instructions, make a change, and do it for your loved ones,” he said.
Living Beyond the Diagnosis
Jesse Quiroz’s journey is a powerful reminder that acceptance and resilience can help overcome life’s toughest challenges. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire others to embrace their diagnosis, adapt, and live life to the fullest.
