The Coastal Bend Public Radio Coalition, an alliance of South Texas emergency agencies, has teamed up with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) to improve emergency communications. In a groundbreaking move set to enhance public safety, first responders across South and Central Texas are joining forces for a game-changing partnership. This collaboration bolsters radio coverage, ensuring seamless communication during critical situations like hurricane evacuations.
Enhancing Public Safety Through Communication
Peter Collins, the City of Corpus Christi’s chief information officer, emphasized the importance of proactive measures in public safety. He noted, “Just having agencies be able to communicate with each other increases the delivery of public safety promptly.” The partnership will allow first responders to maintain uninterrupted radio connectivity outside the Coastal Bend region.
A Critical Step Forward
The expanded radio system will transform emergency response efforts. According to the LCRA, the coalition—including first responders from six counties—will create one of Texas’s largest public safety emergency communication networks. Once fully operational, the system will enable emergency responders to communicate across more than 57 counties, covering about a fifth of the state.
“This is critical,” Collins explained. “The more coverage we have on our radio system and its interconnectivity with others, the better coverage we achieve throughout the state.”
A Unified Front for Emergency Response
The partnership will profoundly impact evacuation efforts and law enforcement collaboration. San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera highlighted the network’s value: “Maintaining working communication channels is paramount, especially during evacuations that put tens of thousands of people on the road. This network also facilitates quick and efficient information sharing among law enforcement agencies, crucial for combating criminal enterprises that span multiple counties.”
The agreement allows the coalition’s 10,400 first responders and users to remain connected throughout South and Central Texas. Effective communication will streamline evacuations and improve coordination in emergencies.
