Highway 361 Tragic Accident

Highway 361

A devastating car accident occurred on State Highway 361 on Friday, August 9th, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old Corpus Christi man and injuries to several others. The incident again highlighted the dangers of this notorious stretch of road and sparked renewed calls for safety improvements.

The Incident: What Happened?

At approximately 8:21 pm, Corpus Christi Police officers responded to a significant vehicle accident near the 9600 block of HWY 361. Upon arrival, they found a tragic scene: a deceased male driver in one of the vehicles involved. The highway was shut down immediately, and traffic investigators were called to assess the situation.

According to the investigation, the 35-year-old man was driving southbound on Highway 361 when he suddenly swerved into the northbound lane. This unexpected move led to a catastrophic chain of events. The man’s vehicle struck another car, causing it to veer off the road and flip over, eventually landing on its side. The man’s vehicle continued down the wrong lane, colliding with a third vehicle.

The Aftermath: Lives Impacted

Tragically, authorities pronounced the driver of the first vehicle dead at the scene. The second vehicle, carrying six occupants, and the third vehicle, with five occupants, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders promptly transported all survivors to local hospitals for treatment.

Authorities identified the deceased driver as the sole occupant of his vehicle and confirmed that he was at fault for the accident. The severity of the crash led to the closure of Highway 361 for several hours as investigators continued their work late into the night.

A Troubling Pattern: The Dangerous Reality of Highway 361

This tragic accident is not an isolated incident. It marks the second fatal crash on Highway 361 this summer alone. Residents of Port Aransas and surrounding areas are all too familiar with the dangers this road poses. Many are now voicing their concerns, calling for immediate action to prevent further tragedies.

Scotty Boos, the manager of 361 Bar, located on the highway, expressed his frustration: “If they don’t want to widen the lanes, just put some cinder block in the middle, making it a four-lane highway. They’re building so many houses out there. It’s just going to get worse.”

Moving Forward: TxDOT’s Response and Upcoming Meeting

In response to the rising number of accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced plans for significant safety improvements on Highway 361. Moreover, Rickey Dailey, TxDOT’s Public Information Officer, underscored the importance of driver responsibility in tandem with these roadway enhancements.

Furthermore, Dailey outlined the upcoming projects to improve highway safety and mobility. The initiatives will widen the roadway to four lanes with a raised center median, add left-turn lanes, and install a sidewalk/shared-use path. Additionally, officials have scheduled a virtual public meeting, with an in-person option, for September 19th, 2024, at Island in the Son Methodist Church to discuss these plans further.

Beyond these future projects, TxDOT has also implemented several immediate safety measures, such as installing lighting at critical intersections, adding center-line and edge-line rumble strips, and creating passing lanes to reduce the risk of head-on collisions. Altogether, these efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance the safety of Highway 361 for everyone who travels it.

Community Reaction: A Call for Vigilance

While the planned improvements are a step in the right direction, many Port Aransas residents feel they are long overdue. They urge drivers to remain cautious and vigilant while navigating Highway 361 until these changes are fully implemented.

Scotty Boos echoed this sentiment, advising, “You gotta be just cautious, be on the lookout; you don’t know what’s going to happen. You just gotta be prepared.”

The upcoming public meeting on September 19th allows community members to voice their concerns and learn more about the planned safety measures. Whether attending virtually or in person, it’s a chance for residents to engage in the process of making Highway 361 a safer place for everyone.
