On Tuesday, local business executives and elected representatives convened at the Omni Hotel to participate in a virtual address by Governor Greg Abbott through the Zoom platform. Initially slated for an in-person appearance, Abbott’s plans were hindered by Tropical Storm Harold, leading to the virtual format.
The Texas Association of Business dubbed the South Texas Development Summit, and it included a momentous occurrence – the signing of House Bill 5. This measure saw substantial input from District 32 Texas State Representative Todd Hunter. Hunter explained that the choice of Corpus Christi as the summit’s location stemmed from the city’s robust local economic development, characterized by burgeoning employment opportunities and the business-conducive environment prevalent in the Coastal Bend region.
He underscored the significance of Governor Abbott’s presence at the event, seeing it as a testament to the Coastal Bend’s pivotal role within Texas.
Hunter states, “The Governor acknowledges the economic surge occurring in Texas, pinpointing our Coastal Bend area as a focal point for substantial growth.”
During the summit, Governor Abbott engaged through Zoom, sharing his perspectives on the region’s economic advancement. Hunter emphasized that a collaborative alliance between Abbott and local leaders propels the advancement of Texas.
Hunter expressed, “A new era for the Coastal Bend is on the horizon. We’re pleased to collaborate with the Governor, driving Texas towards progress.”
Concluding his speech, Governor Abbott announced his intention to formalize House Bill 5’s enactment, also recognized as the Texas Economic Development Act.
“I aimed to do something special today with your esteemed audience and the presence of Todd Hunter. I’m officially putting pen to paper on House Bill 5,” Governor Abbott declared. “House Bill 5 is now legally binding.”
Hunter elaborated that House Bill 5 champions pro-business measures, bolstering industries and nurturing economic growth. Garnering endorsement from over 260 organizations, Hunter spearheaded its development in the Texas House of Representatives. He highlighted the extraordinary significance of Abbott’s choice to ratify the bill in Corpus Christi, a gesture that resonated deeply within their district. “This is an immense honor for us, for him to officially sign the bill in our great district,” Hunter expressed gratefully.
Hunter also interpreted Abbott’s participation in the Tuesday event as a promising indicator of impending job expansion and an influx of business activities in the Coastal Bend. He attributed the successful realization of House Bill 5 to the unwavering support extended by fellow state legislators and leaders.
