Flu season is just around the corner, and with it comes the need for people to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health. While the official start of flu season is a month away, medical professionals urge individuals to vaccinate and adopt preventive measures.
The Importance of Getting Vaccinated
Raul Elizondo, a pharmacist at CVS, emphasizes that getting a flu shot is essential for personal protection and the safety of the wider community. “It’s important to get your flu shot, not just to protect yourself but others around you,” Elizondo said.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu cases have seen a notable rise, with a 9.2% increase since October 2023. The flu adds another concern as the Coastal Bend region continues to battle rising COVID-19 cases. Elizondo encourages individuals to take preventive actions to stop the spread of both viruses.
Increasing Flu and COVID-19 Concerns
The recent uptick in flu cases mirrors the ongoing concerns about COVID-19. “I’ve noticed more customers wearing masks again because they want to protect themselves,” said Elizondo. “There’s been a significant spike in that. We’ve also seen a couple of flu cases in the last few weeks.”
Preventive measures become even more critical with the dual threat of flu and COVID-19. Elizondo urges everyone six months and older to get a flu shot, noting that it’s an easy and effective way to prevent illness. “The entire community can get the flu shot for the most part,” he added. “However, some patients with immunological conditions cannot get vaccinated. It’s our job to protect those individuals.”
The Community Takes Action
While flu season officially begins in October, some residents are already taking the necessary steps to protect themselves. Resident Richard Ubbink, for example, has already scheduled his flu shot. “It’s not a big deal,” Ubbink said. “You come in, sit down, they give you the shot, and you’re on your way. It really does protect you.”
Another resident, Mike Perez, echoed similar sentiments. “With everything going on, including epidemics, it’s hard to know what else might come our way. You might as well get the shot to stay safe,” Perez said.
Early Is Key
Experts agree that getting the flu shot sooner rather than later is better. Vaccines, including the flu shot, take approximately two weeks to become effective. Therefore, scheduling your vaccination earlier ensures you are protected before the flu season’s peak.
Elizondo stresses the importance of not waiting until it’s too late. By getting vaccinated now, individuals can significantly reduce their chances of contracting the flu and help protect the community’s most vulnerable members.
With flu season rapidly approaching and a rise in both flu and COVID-19 cases, taking proactive steps is crucial. Getting vaccinated, wearing masks, and maintaining good hygiene can all contribute to keeping yourself and others safe. Schedule your flu shot today and stay ahead of the curve.
