As flu cases continue to surge across the United States, Texas is experiencing its spike, and the Coastal Bend region is no exception. Health authorities in the area have indicated a notable rise in cases, highlighting the immediate necessity for preventive actions.
Another Flu Cases Surge Hits Coastal Bend
According to Nueces County-Corpus Christi Public Health District Interim Public Health Director Dante Gonzalez, flu cases are again rising.
“In Week 4, we had 609 cases, and by Week 5, that number jumped to 729,” Gonzalez stated.
While this is still below the December peak of over 1,000 cases, the steady rise signals an ongoing public health concern. Gonzalez noted that the flu season has not yet peaked, with Flu A being the dominant strain affecting younger individuals.
Children Are Most Affected by the Surge
Flu A, known for its more severe impact on children, accounts for over 90% of the reported cases. Dr. Jaime Fergie, the Director of Infectious Diseases at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, stated that pediatric flu cases have reached their peak for this season.
“We are witnessing a dramatic increase in the number of children coming in with influenza,” Fergie said.
Hospitals Overwhelmed with Flu Cases
Driscoll Children’s Hospital and its outpatient facilities conduct 800 to 900 flu tests weekly, indicating the virus’s rapid spread. The flu also leads to severe complications such as pneumonia, causing hospitalizations and, in some cases, requiring intensive care.
“We are seeing what is being reported across the state,” Fergie added.
Flu-Related Deaths and the Importance of Prevention
Nationally, the flu has claimed the lives of 57 children this year. With emergency rooms and clinics overwhelmed, doctors continue to stress the importance of vaccination.
“We are very, very busy in ERs and clinics,” Fergie said. “The hospital has space now, but the key message remains the same: vaccination is the best defense.”
