Corpus Christi’s popular Cole Park Pier is set to receive a significant upgrade, relieving visitors during the sweltering Texas summers. Mayor Guajardo and the City Council have approved a contract to install new shade at the Pier’s Park Plaza, ensuring an improved experience for park-goers of all ages.
Investment in Comfort and Quality of Life
During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Gourley Contractors, LLC of Corpus Christi, was awarded a $689,934 contract for the project. This exciting development highlights the city’s commitment to enhancing community spaces.
Rebuilt and reopened in December 2021, Cole Park Pier has become a cherished destination for outdoor gatherings. The Park Plaza sits adjacent to the pier and is a hotspot for events and relaxation. However, the lack of adequate shade has been a longstanding concern for visitors, especially during the hotter months. The newly approved shade structures aim to address this issue, making the area more enjoyable year-round.
What to Expect from the New Shade Structures
The project involves installing a visually appealing two-toned, four-paneled shade structure supported by 12 concrete columns. These columns will provide structural support and include additional features for convenience. Each column will feature white lighting, while the four corner columns will consist of electrical outlets, enhancing the space’s functionality for various activities.
The shade structure’s design will seamlessly integrate with Cole Park Pier’s existing aesthetics, maintaining the area’s cohesive look and feel. City officials are confident the addition will significantly elevate the park’s usability and comfort.
A Statement from Mayor Guajardo
Mayor Paulette Guajardo expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its impact on the community. “The addition of shade structures at Cole Park Plaza enhances the comfort and usability of this beloved space, encouraging more residents and visitors to enjoy our beautiful waterfront year-round,” she said. “Investments like this strengthen our city’s appeal and improve the quality of life for everyone in Corpus Christi.”
Construction Timeline and Anticipated Benefits
Construction will begin in January 2025 and be completed in the early summer of the same year. This timeline ensures that residents and visitors can enjoy the new shaded areas just in time for the peak summer season.
The project is poised to attract even more visitors to Cole Park Pier by creating a cooler and more inviting environment, boosting local tourism and community engagement.
