Carroll High School Campus Set for Demolition

The Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD) has officially decided to demolish the original Carroll High School campus, citing significant issues such as vandalism, theft, and the high costs associated with maintaining the vacant property.

A Nostalgic Reflection on Carroll High School’s Legacy

Hector Ramos, a long-time neighborhood resident since 1964, shared his memories of the campus during its heyday.

“Oh, we walked in there and we said, oh my goodness gracious… it’s like going to New York!” Ramos recalled with a smile, reminiscing about his first impression of the campus as a basketball player for Robstown High School when the school opened in 1957.

Located at Weber Road and Tiger Lane, the campus stood as a symbol of pride for decades. However, for the past two years, it has remained vacant following the relocation of Carroll High School to a new campus at Kostoryz and Saratoga.

Challenges Faced by CCISD

Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez highlighted the difficulties of keeping the campus intact.

“They have just about taken all of the copper in the school,” Hernandez stated. “They find ways inside the building, or people have been occupying the building, living in the school.”

Trent Wagner, CCISD’s Executive Director of Construction and Project Management, explained that the escalating vandalism and ongoing maintenance costs were major factors in the board’s decision to move forward with demolition.

“We’ve had increased vandalism, and carrying costs really affected that and really weighed heavy. So ultimately, the board approved to demo,” Wagner said.

Financial Impact and Controversy

The demolition, estimated at $2.2 million, will be funded using the remaining funds from a 2018 bond. However, the decision was not without controversy.

Board member Marty Bell voiced concerns about allocating resources for the demolition while other schools in the district still face unresolved issues.

“We still have stuff at King High School classrooms, hallways that can be addressed,” Bell pointed out. “Moody High School’s restrooms… that’s still an issue.”

Future Plans for the Site

CCISD plans to preserve a mural from the original campus during demolition. In addition, CCISD will hold workshops to determine the property’s future use. It marks the end of an era for the iconic campus but opens the door for new opportunities in the community.
