Campaign

A Day of Triumph

On a bright Friday, March 22, the Corpus Christi Fire Department (CCFD) joyfully marked the completion of its annual “Fill the Boot” campaign. This initiative supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and represents a significant effort by the firefighters to contribute to a cause close to their hearts. This year’s campaign added another successful chapter to the department’s long-standing support tradition, reflecting the community’s generosity and the firefighters’ unwavering dedication.

Community Engagement and Impressive Achievements

During three consecutive Fridays, firefighters across Corpus Christi positioned themselves at major intersections, engaging with the public and collecting donations in their boots from empathetic drivers. The results were outstanding in 2023, with the CCFD raising an impressive $102,632. Encouraged by this success, the department has set an ambitious goal to surpass the $100,000 mark again in 2024. The early weeks of the campaign were promising, with approximately $70,000 in donations already secured, setting an optimistic tone for the campaign’s continuation.

A Personal Campaign at Fire Station 15

Fire Station 15, located on Padre Island, has been a dedicated participant in the Fill the Boot campaign since 1986. For these firefighters, supporting the cause is more than just an obligation; it is a heartfelt mission. “Many of us have personal connections to someone with muscular dystrophy, particularly through our EMS program,” reflected Fire Chief Timothy Netek. “We often meet individuals who greatly benefit from the services and programs funded by this campaign.”

Making a Tangible Impact

The campaign raises funds and significantly strengthens the bond between firefighters and local families affected by muscular dystrophy in the Coastal Bend area. Carlos Torres, Co-Coordinator of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, highlighted the broad impact of the campaign, stating, “MDA has been combating over 40 neuromuscular diseases for the past 70 years. This initiative allows firefighters to support the families they help directly.”

Furthermore, David Amaro, a firefighter at Station 15 with 23 years of participation in the Fill the Boot campaign, emphasized the tangible benefits of their fundraising efforts. “The money raised enables children with disabilities to attend special summer camps, providing them opportunities to enjoy experiences that many of us often take for granted,” he explained, underlining the significant difference these contributions make.

Campaign Recognition and Future Aspirations

The dedication of Corpus Christi’s firefighters has not only made a significant impact locally but also garnered national recognition. Notably, the CCFD was ranked as the top contributor in their International Association of Firefighters 11th district for two consecutive years, 2022 and 2023, serving as a testament to their hard work and the strong support from the community.

Moreover, Chief Netek perfectly captured the spirit behind their efforts, stating, “Any opportunity to help out the community is what we’re all about. As firefighters and paramedics, our instinct is to lend a hand wherever possible.” This ethos motivates the CCFD and its members to continue their tradition of the Fill the Boot campaign, which transcends mere fundraising to touch lives and inspire hope genuinely.

As the 2024 campaign draws to a close, anticipation builds for the final tally of donations. Fire Station 15 and the rest of the CCFD are eager to maintain this cherished tradition, driven by a belief in community, compassion, and the collective power to enact change for those with muscular dystrophy. The Fill the Boot campaign remains a beacon of hope and a reflection of the indomitable spirit of Corpus Christi’s firefighters and the community they serve.
