In a spectacular display of tradition and community spirit, Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo embraced the festive spirit by diving into Corpus Christi Bay on Thursday. This event marked the official start of Buc Days, a beloved local festival that ushers in the summer season.
A Dive into the Tradition of Buc Days
The sight of the mayor being captured by “pirates” and dunked into the bay is a cherished ritual at Buc Days. As Mayor Guajardo made her splash, the carnival gates swung open, welcoming visitors to the first exhilarating night of the festival. The carnival boasts its usual attractions—thrilling rides, the Shops at Treasure Island, and an array of tempting food stalls, ensuring there’s something to delight everyone.
Community Impact of Buc Days
For residents like Edna Trevino, Buc Days is more than just a festival; it’s a yearly tradition that holds significant cultural importance. “I really think it brings the best of Corpus Christi because a lot of people are looking forward to this,” Trevino explains. The event garners particular excitement from local schools, especially the Corpus Christi Independent School District (CCISD), which sees enthusiastic participation from students eager to join in the parade.
New Attractions and Expansions
Mark Avelar, Buccaneer Commissioner, highlights the expansion of this year’s festival—the 86th iteration and the largest yet. “Everyone has their different traditions of things they want to do; some really like coming to the parade, some come directly for the carnival. The nice thing this year is we’re offering something for everyone,” Avelar notes.
Among the new attractions is the Kraken, a rare ride making its second appearance at a festival in the country. Included in the wristband offerings, the Kraken promises to be a major draw. Additionally, Avelar announces an extended rodeo schedule, with eight days of events compared to four in previous years. Another new feature is the enhanced value of the $10 gate admission, which now includes access to the Museum of Science and History, the Art Museum, and the newly reopened water garden.
A Festival with a Cause
Beyond the entertainment and excitement, Buc Days plays a vital role in supporting the community. “We are giving more than $100,000 in college scholarships because of the efforts that we’re putting together. So that we can continue to provide education opportunities to some students who may not have been able to go to college,” Avelar adds. This commitment to educational support showcases the festival’s dedication to giving back and fostering future generations.
Engaging the Tech-Savvy Youth
The festival will also host the third annual robotics rodeo on Saturday, featuring nearly 100 teams in a showcase of innovation and engineering prowess. This event not only entertains but also stimulates young minds in the fields of science and technology.
Buc Days run through May 12, offering activities and experiences for all ages. As the festival continues to grow, it remains a cornerstone of Corpus Christi’s cultural and community calendar, bringing together the best of fun, tradition, and philanthropy. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a food lover, or a culture enthusiast, Buc Days promises something for everyone in this vibrant celebration of community spirit.
