The Corpus Christi Fire Department is urging residents of the Coastal Bend region to exercise increased caution when plugging in or lighting items in their homes, especially as the city enters cooler weather.
As the department concludes its Fire Safety Week initiative, it emphasizes that individuals using candles in their homes, whether homeowners or apartment residents, should ensure they are positioned on a stable surface to prevent any potential burning or tipping hazards.
They also wish to emphasize the importance of maintaining a minimum distance of 12 inches between candles and flammable objects. Additionally, they recommend extinguishing candles before leaving a room, departing from their homes, or retiring to bed.
Furthermore, it is crucial to ensure that children and pets are kept away from lit candles, and people should consider opting for safer battery-operated flameless candles.
The fire department stresses the significance of space heater safety as we enter the fall and winter seasons. Remembering to only plug space heaters directly into wall outlets is of utmost importance.
Never connect them to extension cords or power strips. Individuals should place space heaters on a stable, level surface and keep them, along with their power cords, away from potential fire hazards, high-traffic areas, and doorways.
