A three-vehicle crash near Robstown early Thursday morning left a 22-year-old man dead and his 21-year-old passenger critically injured, according to information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Authorities identified the driver who died as Raynaldo Garcia of Robstown. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene following the collision near the Robstown landfill.
Meanwhile, emergency crews transported Garcia’s passenger to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline Hospital in critical condition. The drivers of the two other vehicles involved escaped without injuries.
Three-Vehicle Crash Happens Near Robstown
The fatal Robstown crash occurred shortly after midnight at the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2826 and County Road 77.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the scene and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Their preliminary findings indicate that three vehicles became involved, although the initial impact occurred between a Kia Sportage and a truck tractor towing a tanker.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2023 Kia Sportage was traveling southbound on County Road 77 and approaching FM 2826.
At the same time, a 2024 Mack truck tractor towing a 2011 Step Tanker was traveling westbound on FM 2826 and moving through the intersection.
Investigators Say Kia Disregarded Stop Sign
Investigators said the Kia disregarded a stop sign as it entered the intersection. The vehicle then struck the rear portion of the trailer.
The impact caused the Kia to become caught and dragged before it eventually separated from the trailer.
The force of the collision proved fatal for Garcia. Authorities pronounced the 22-year-old Robstown resident dead at the crash scene.
His 21-year-old passenger survived the initial impact but suffered serious injuries. First responders transported the passenger to CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline Hospital, where the individual was reported in critical condition.
Officials did not immediately release the passenger’s identity or provide additional information about the person’s injuries.
Third Vehicle Damaged by Crash Debris
A third vehicle also became involved in the aftermath of the collision.
Authorities said a 2003 Mercury SPG was traveling eastbound on FM 2826 when debris from the crash struck the vehicle. The debris caused minor damage to the Mercury’s passenger side.
However, the Mercury driver was not injured. The driver of the Mack truck tractor also avoided injury in the collision.
Although the third vehicle sustained only minor damage, its involvement highlights how debris from a major collision can create additional hazards for nearby motorists.
DPS Continues Robstown Crash Investigation
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the fatal crash. As a result, details from the preliminary investigation could change as troopers collect additional evidence and complete their review.
Investigators may examine several factors as part of that process, including the vehicles’ positions, roadway conditions, and other evidence available at the scene. Authorities have not announced whether any additional factors contributed to the collision.
The crash also reminds drivers to stop completely at traffic control signs, particularly at intersections where vehicles may be traveling at higher speeds.

Stop signs give drivers time to check for approaching traffic before entering or crossing a roadway. At intersections involving rural roads and major farm-to-market routes, drivers should remain especially alert because visibility, vehicle speeds and nighttime conditions can affect reaction time.
Motorists should come to a complete stop, check carefully in both directions and confirm that the roadway is clear before proceeding. Drivers should also use additional caution around commercial trucks because their size and weight can significantly increase the severity of a collision.
The early-morning Robstown crash left one family mourning while another waits for news about a critically injured passenger.
