The Houston Astros’ top prospect, Cam Smith, never saw the trade coming. The Chicago Cubs traded the young slugger to Houston in December’s blockbuster deal involving All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker while he was still adjusting to professional baseball.
“I was very shocked. I honestly didn’t know [a trade] was possible,” Smith told MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo. “I didn’t know the business side of baseball.”
Despite his surprise, Cam Smith is quickly adapting to his new organization, and he’s already making a strong impression on Houston’s front office and coaching staff.
A Batting Sensation in the Making
Smith may still be learning the business side of baseball, but his bat speaks volumes. The 6-foot-3 power hitter showcased his talent in the minor leagues last season, blasting seven home runs and posting an impressive 1.005 OPS in just 115 at-bats. His raw power and advanced approach at the plate make him a highly coveted asset for the Astros.
Jeff Bagwell, former Astros slugger, and current team advisor, noted Smith’s potential. Bagwell raved about his size and power, seeing him as a future cornerstone of the franchise. Just last week, Smith delivered a two-homer performance in Spring Training, further solidifying his standing as the organization’s top prospect.
When Will Smith Make His MLB Debut?
While the 2025 season could see Smith getting a late-season call-up, the more likely scenario is a Major League debut on Opening Day 2026. The Astros are still evaluating where he fits best defensively, with scouts debating whether his build is more suited for left field or first base. However, Smith remains firm on where he believes he belongs.
“I really, really enjoy third base,” Smith said. “I’ve always been a shortstop growing up, I’ve always played infield, so infield is where I belong, in the dirt.”
If the Astros honor Smith’s defensive preference, some roster adjustments will be necessary. One possibility is shifting Jose Altuve to left field, moving Isaac Paredes to second base, and slotting Smith in at third base. While this arrangement might not provide the best infield defense, Smith’s powerful bat could easily justify the move.
The Road Ahead for Smith
For now, Smith will continue fine-tuning his game in Spring Training, finishing up in his hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida. After camp breaks, he’s expected to start the 2025 season in the minor leagues, likely with Double-A Corpus Christi. However, if he keeps swinging a hot bat, a mid-season promotion to Triple-A—and eventually the big leagues—could be in the cards.
Smith’s journey is just beginning, but Houston fans have every reason to be excited. With his elite power and undeniable potential, he could soon become a fixture in the Astros’ lineup, as he is the top prospect for now.
