On November 7, 2024, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS) marked a sobering milestone, 24 years of daily roadway deaths and in response, TxDOT and DPS launched the “End the Streak” campaign to end this relentless loss cycle. This tragic streak has persisted since November 7, 2000, with at least one person losing their life on Texas roads every day.
24 Years, Over 80,000 Lives Lost
Since the streak began, more than 80,000 lives have been claimed by traffic accidents across the state. These fatalities are more than just numbers—they represent loved ones lost, families shattered, and communities affected. The “End the Streak” campaign seeks to break this chain by raising awareness and promoting safer driving habits.
Alarming Statistics in Corpus Christi and Beyond
The campaign emphasizes the alarming number of accidents and fatalities occurring across Texas. To illustrate, in 2023 alone, Corpus Christi experienced a staggering 7,438 traffic crashes, which tragically resulted in 36 deaths and 143 serious injuries. Furthermore, the numbers become even more concerning when looking at the broader Corpus Christi District—encompassing counties such as Nueces, Kleberg, and San Patricio. This region reported 12,406 traffic crashes, leading to 117 fatalities and 388 serious injuries. These statistics highlight the pressing need for immediate action to improve road safety and prevent further loss of life.
Fundamental Causes of Fatal Accidents
To tackle the issue, DPS Safety Education Officer Sgt. Rob Mallory emphasized the importance of education and partnership. “Our goal is to have another fatality-free day and eventually end fatality crashes in Texas,” he stated. As part of the campaign, DPS Troopers will distribute educational cards to drivers throughout November. These cards highlight the top five causes of fatal accidents:
- Speeding
- Failure to wear a seat belt
- Failure to move over or slow down
- Driving under the influence
- Distracted driving
The campaign hopes to instill safer driving habits among Texans by addressing these common factors.
